SAN MATEO, CAOctober 3, 2005 –Sling Media today announced the immediate availability of a software and firmware upgrade for the award-winning Slingbox, a TV “place-shifting” device that gives users anywhere/anytime access to their own living-room TV experience. The upgrade enhances the Slingbox user experience in a number of ways, including:

  • Significant improvements in the SlingStream algorithms allowing users to achieve higher bitrates while streaming.  This affects users both at home and remotely, and beta testers are reporting between 25% and 300% gains in video quality performance.
  • Users may now connect more than one device to the Slingbox, and the SlingPlayer software allows for rapid input switching.  This is especially useful for consumers who wish to connect an AV device as well as an analog cable source.  Multiple input support was implemented as a direct result of user feedback, and was selected as one of the most important new features for the Slingbox.
  • Manual audio and video controls allow users to make subtle changes to the input signal for their Slingbox.  Users can now fine-tune the input audio volume, as well as brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue for each input on the Slingbox.  These controls were also a “high-want item” as reported by many of our customers.
  • Favorite channel buttons are now accessible for users who wish to create “shortcuts” for the channels they watch the most frequently.  Users can simply click on the “favorite channel region” and add a channel along with a graphical icon.  This is the first of many planned features which allow Slingbox owners to create their personalized SlingPlayer experience.  Also, users can even import any picture from their hard drive to use as an icon.
  • Enhanced Windows-based help system is now incorporated, giving users quick access to a rich help interface.  Users can now search for support and tips without leaving the SlingPlayer interface.
  • Many new remote control codes were added, as well as improvements to existing IR codes.  Anyone who owns a TiVo, ReplayTV, UltimateTV, Scientific Atlanta, or Motorola set-top box should be quite happy with the enhanced virtual remote control offerings!

Customers will be notified of the upgrade automatically and will be prompted to perform both the firmware and software upgrade. If you are not notified of the upgrade, it is available for download from the company’s website at the following link: http://www.slingmedia.com/support/downloads.php?version=1.0.4.107
