Setting up your Slingbox 500

When you set up your Slingbox 500, there are a couple of ways that you can go about it. Here's an overview.

Two ways to set up your Slingbox 500

Did you know that there are two ways that you can set up (or reconfigure) your Slingbox 500?

Those two ways are:

  • Via the onscreen interface (on your home TV)
  • Via a computer that's connected to your home network

The only exception: first-time Wi-Fi setup

The only thing that you cannot do using a computer is set up the Wi-Fi connection for your Slingbox. If you're connecting your Slingbox to your home network via Wi-Fi, instead of a network cable, then Wi-Fi setup must be done using the Onscreen Method.

However, once that's done, you can set up (or reconfigure) your Slingbox 500 entirely using either the Onscreen Method, or the Computer Method.

To use the Onscreen Method

Most folks use the Onscreen Method. It's what they see after they've hooked up the cables to their Slingbox, and it's the method that you must use if you want to connect your Slingbox 500 to your network via Wi-Fi. (If you connect your Slingbox to your network using Ethernet (network) cable, then you can also use the Computer Method).

  1. Finish the cable connection process for your Slingbox 500.
  2. Turn your TV on.
  3. Be sure to switch your TV's source to the set-top box output that you connected the Slingbox cables to.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. After you have connected your Slingbox 500 to your Wi-Fi network, and finished setting it up, if you need to go back and change any settings you can either do that via your TV's screen, or you can use your computer.

Ultimately there's no difference between the two methods. However, using your computer might be nicer if you prefer typing to selecting from an onscreen keyboard.

To use the Computer Method

If you have connected your Slingbox 500 to your home network using an Ethernet (network) cable, then you can set it up using the Computer Method. This way can be easier if you need to enter longer strings of text:

  1. Finish the cable connection process for your Slingbox 500.
  2. Connect your Slingbox 500 to your home network using a network cable.
If you want to use Wi-Fi, then you must follow the Onscreen Method above.
  3. Using a computer that is on the same network as your Slingbox 500, open Slingplayer for Desktop.
  4. Select your Slingbox 500 to configure from the Slingbox Directory. It is likely titled "My Slingbox" for now (you can rename it later).
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Slingbox.

Reconfiguring your Slingbox 500

If you should need to change something with your Slingbox 500, such as if you changed your set-top box, then you can use either the Onscreen Method, or the Computer Method, to make the change(s).

Note: Any tasks involving your network, such as specifying a new router or changing your network password, must be done using the Onscreen Method.

To reconfigure using the Onscreen Method

  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. Using the remote control that came with your Slingbox 500, press the topmost button (the Sling logo button).
  3. Read and click past any notices that you see. Or press the Sling logo button again.
  4. Using the Slingbox 500 remote control, click the right-arrow button to navigate to Settings, then press OK.
  5. Navigate to the setting that you'd like to change, then press OK.

To reconfigure using the Computer Method

  1. Launch Slingplayer for Desktop.
  2. Select your Slingbox 500 to set up from the Slingbox Directory.
  3. Once you're connected to your Slingbox 500, click Settings at the top of the screen.
  4. Choose the setting(s) that you would like to change. Follow the onscreen instructions.
