An HDMI-to-component adapter that you can use

The third-party HDMI Adapter product converts HDMI signals into Component video/stereo audio signals.

This HDMI Adapter is very simple: it takes the signal from an HDMI cable and converts it into signals for component cables (red/green/blue for video; red/white for stereo audio).

This can be helpful in a couple of ways:

  • If you have a Slingbox 500, and are connecting your set-top box to your Slingbox using HDMI cables ... but are experiencing "blank screen" issues ... the HDMI Adapter product converts the HDMI signal into Component video/stereo audio, which offers you an alternative connection method.
  • If you have another Slingbox model, but your set-top box only offers an HDMI output (no component output), the HDMI Adapter product provides component outputs that you can use with your Slingbox.

Purchasing information

The HDMI Adapter product is made by Frontier Factory and is available via Amazon.com:

What's in the box?

  • HDMI Adapter box
  • HDMI cable
  • One USB cable (for power)

IMPORTANT NOTE: A USB power supply is not included (just the cable). Use any USB 5-volt power supply.

Any additional cables must also be purchased separately.

HDMI Adapter setup

Setting up the HDMI Adapter is pretty basic.

For a Slingbox 500 (with an HDMI input/output)

Connect the cables this way:

  1. Existing HDMI cable: Reconnect your existing HDMI cable so that it connects the HDMI-Out output on your set-top box to the HDMI-In input on the HDMI Adapter.
  2. Supplied HDMI cable: Connect the supplied HDMI cable from the HDMI-Out output on the HDMI Adapter to the HDMI-In input on your Slingbox 500.
  3. Additional HDMI cable (not supplied): Connect an additional HDMI cable from the HDMI-Out output on the Slingbox 500 to the HDMI-In input on the TV.
  4. USB power: Use the supplied USB cable to connect the HDMI Adapter to the USB port on the back of the Slingbox 500. This provides power only to the HDMI Adapter; no video, audio, or other data signal.
If you see a blank screen on your TV:
  1. Power TV on.
  2. Using the Slingbox 500 remote control, press the Sling logo key (at the top).
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Choose Input.
  5. Choose the HDMI input.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to reconfigure the HDMI input.
Please note:
  • The HDMI signal flows from the set-top box, through the HDMI Adapter, then through the Slingbox 500, then into the TV.
  • The HDMI Adapter requires USB power. It does not come with a power supply. The Slingbox 500 USB port is fine to use as a power source. Alternatively, you can use a power source such as an Android USB charger.

For other Slingbox models that only have component inputs/outputs

Connect the cables this way:
  1. Existing HDMI cable: Reconnect your existing HDMI cable so that it connects the HDMI-Out output on your set-top box to the HDMI-In input on the HDMI Adapter.
  2. Supplied HDMI cable: Connect the supplied HDMI cable from the HDMI-Out output on the HDMI Adapter to the HDMI-In input on your TV.
  3. Supplied component cable: Connect the supplied component cable set (red/green/blue video and red/white audio cables) from the Component-Out and the Audio-Out outputs on the HDMI Adapter to the Component-In and Audio-In inputs on the Slingbox M1/M2.
  4. USB power: Power the HDMI Adapter by connecting the supplied USB cable from the USB port on the HDMI Adapter to any nearby available USB port. You might find one on the back of your set-top box, or on the back of your TV.
Please note:
  • The HDMI signal flows from the set-top box into the HDMI Adapter. Then the HDMI signal can continue into the TV, while the component video/audio signals flow into the Slingbox.
  • The HDMI Adapter requires USB power. It does not come with a power supply. Many TVs and set-top boxes have USB ports that can be used, or you will need to find another USB power source. For example, a power source such as an Android USB charger would work well.
  • The USB port on the back of the Slingbox SOLO does not provide sufficient power for this purpose.
