Troubleshooting "No Video Signal" errors during setup

Getting a "No Video Signal" error while setting up your Slingbox 350, Slingbox M1/M2, or Slingbox 500? Here's help!

Fortunately, a No Video Signal error, shown below, is relatively easy to fix. It is usually caused by one of these issues:

  • Your video source isn't powered on.
  • Your video source isn't properly connected to your Slingbox.
  • Your video signal is blocked by a form of copy protection called SOC, or Selectable Output Control. Look below for more information.


Confirming that your video source is properly connected

  1. Turn on the TV and set-top box that your Slingbox is connected to. Make sure that they work properly. For instance, can you see and hear video on your TV?
  2. Look at the back of the video source.
    Make sure that the video cables that you've connected to your Slingbox are connected to the OUT ports on your video source.
  3. Now check the back of the Slingbox. Are the cables going into the IN ports on your Slingbox?
  4. Compare the colors of the ports that your cables are connected to ... they should match on both your video source and your Slingbox.
    1. If you're using component (red, blue, green), your cables need to be the connected to the same colored ports on your video source and your Slingbox.
    2. With component (red, blue, green) connections, you also need to connect separate audio (red, white) cables.
    3. If you're using composite (red, white, yellow), your cables also need to be connected to the same colored ports on both your video source and your Slingbox.
  5. There are two ways to connect your Slingbox to your video source:
    1. Using an additional video cable output from your video source to your Slingbox. The connection between your video source and your TV isn't affected.
    2. Using your Slingbox as a "passthrough" between your video source and your TV.

      If you're using this type of connection, make sure that the necessary cables are connected between the OUT ports on your Slingbox, and the IN ports on your TV. If they're not, your Slingbox will show a picture ... but your TV won't.

Fixing an SOC problem

If none of the above steps produce a video signal, and you notice that the video over component goes "dark" when you attach an HDMI cable to your set-top box, you probably have an SOC (Selectable Output Control) capable set-top box.

To enable a Slingbox 500 to placeshift HD content with an SOC-capable set-top box, make sure that you have component cables connected to and from the Slingbox 500. Then go to Advanced Settings and select Disable HDMI on placeshifting.

Or, you can disconnect the HDMI cable from your set-top box to your TV and use component cables instead. This applies to a Slingbox 350 as well as a Slingbox 500. See the articles linked below for more information.


Another option for fixing SOC problems

Another option you can use, if you'd like to keep using the HDMI input from your set-top box with your Slingbox, is an inexpensive third-party product called the HDMI Adapter (or HDMI Splitter).

This third-party product (not sold by Sling Media) is very simple: it takes an HDMI signal from your set-top box, and converts it to Component video (and stereo audio). Using this product can help you in a couple of ways:

  • It offers Component video/stereo audio connections if you'd like to use that connection method, but your set-top box doesn't offer Component;
  • It can help if you're experiencing a "blank screen" problem while streaming (either your home TV goes blank when you're streaming remotely, or certain programs don't appear).
